The high reliance and demand for non-renewable energy push the need for alternative renewable
resource of energy. In this study, a biodiesel made from mango seed oil was investigated to understand its
viability as substitute to commercial pure petro-diesel and palm oil biodiesel. The extraction of mango seed
oil was done by using Soxhlet method. The extracted oil was combined with pure petro-diesel by 10% of its
total weight of mixture to create mango biodiesel seed oil (B10). The B10 was tested for its fuel characteristics
together with pure petro-diesel and palm oil biodiesel. The fuel characteristics test results indicated some
advantages of mango biodiesel seed oil B10 compared to the pure-petrodiesel and palm oil biodiesel. Further
study on the engine performance of the fuels were conducted by utilizing water brake dynamometer. The
engine performance results show B10 has overall better power, torque, BMEP, SFC and thermal efficiency
compared to pure petro-diesel and palm oil biodiesel. Both investigations of fuel characteristics and engine
performances corroborate the use of mango seed biodiesel as substitute for pure petro-diesel and palm oil
biodiesel in Indonesia.
